The church was built by Augustinians barefoot community in 1599. Fifty years later in 1654 the building was renovated and in 1670 another architect completed the building of the facade. In 1883 Pope Leo XIII gave the church to Armenian Catholic community. It is also notable that one of the favorites to become a pope in 1958 cardinal Aghadjanyan is buried inside the St Nicola.
