Armenian Community, P.O. Box 932, Khartoum, Sudan, Tel: +249-11-42957
The decision to erect an Armenian church was initially made in 1933, but construction began only in 1953, when the necessary funds were allocated by members of the Seferian family. Three years later, the temple was consecrated in the name of St. Gregory the Illuminator. The first Armenians came to Sudan in the mid-nineteenth century, but a sizable Armenian community was formed after the 1915 Genocide, when many Armenians immigrated there from Western Armenia. In recent years, because of incessant conflicts, most Armenians have left the country, and now Sudan is home to only a few dozen Armenians. Services at St. Gregory are conducted by representatives of the Armenian Diocese of Egypt.
