St Kevork Church was built in 1251 by a rich Erzurumian merchant Umek Karintsi who moved to Tbilisi in the middle of XIII century and married to the princess Mame Vakhtangian – the daughter of Khachen lord from Hasan – Djalalian family. During the war in XVIII century the church was seized by Persians and was badly damaged. Under order of Eracly the II the church was restored and returned to Armenian community. Many great Armenian culture and military personalities such as poet and musician Sayat – Nova, general Mikhail Loris – Mekikian, Hovhannes Lazarian and Russo – Turkish war hero general Boris Shelkovnikov are buried in St Kevork. Nowadays the church is Armenian archbishop’s residence in Tbilisi.
