In 1880s the Armenian population of Athens increased because of the refuges of Cilicia which created a demand for an Armenian church. It took about 5 years to get the license of bishop of Athens to found an Armenian church. In 1908 thanks to the efforts of Armenian community a land was purchased for the construction of St. Gregory the Illuminator church building. Not until 1935 a modern church was built and the archbishopric was moved there.
