At the beginning of the 19th century, some members of the Armenian Mekhitarist Congregation moved from Venice to Vienna. In 1810, they founded the Vienna Mekhitarist Monastery, housed in buildings that belonged to the Order of Capuchins. The monastery was rebuilt in the late 1830s and soon, it joined the ranks of the Mekhitarist Monastery in Venice as one of the largest Armenian cultural centers in the world. The monastery is home to a magnificent collection of over 10,000 Armenian coins. It also houses an extensive collection of paintings by Armenian artists. Its rich library has more than 2,800 manuscripts and more than 170,000 volumes of ancient and modern prints. Numerous filings of Armenian newspapers and magazines are also kept in the monastery.
