Aragats: The Language of High Praise

Aragats – A stand alone, extinct volcano, it is the highest mountain in the territory of modern day Armenia. In imme¬morial times, a powerful volcanic eruption, most likely accompanied by an explosion, destroyed the mountain peak and formed an irregularly shaped crater. It is surrounded by four peaks, like lobes of a gigantic flower. Armenian cities and villages located on the foot of Aragats’ mount, presently form a province called Aragatsotn Marz (Province).

Kirk Kerkorian’s Incredible Journey

This fall, as the world was engulfed in questioning the economic model that had seemingly plunged the American financial system into a desperate downward spiral, YEREVAN had the opportunity to interview Kirk Kerkorian, the iconic business financier whose financial success is rooted and driven by that same economic model.

Dreams on canvas

Rays of light stream into the studio through large, vertical windows and skylights nestled in the high ceiling, into an open space with lots of breathing room. In juxtaposition to this artist’s space is a meditation room with a mat placed in the center facing a prayer nook. This is the studio of artist Edward Zakarian; a space not just for sculpting and painting, but for creating a higher version of one’s self.

The Gorgeous Gorgs

After the King's Henry VIII passing, his collection of eight hundred carpets — and among them numerous Armenian rugs — were left to rot on the damp stone floors of the Palace at Hampton Court. Fortunately, the carpets, which did not fall into the hands of the King, were spared from destruction and can be seen on the floors and walls of museums and noble houses throughout Europe.

Captivating Beauty

Barcelona attracts people from across like a magnet. What is it: a call from one’s soul, an escape from problems, or a quest for happiness? Why, leaving hearth and home, do they go to this particular city? The answer is simple: freedom. Nobody here pays attention to what you wear, or do, or to which God you pray. Barcelona values you as you are. Seventeen hundred years of history - the rule of the Romans, Muslims, Castilians, French, plus revolutions and the anti-Catalonian dictatorship - have taught its citizens to value freedom.

The First Queen of Jerusalem

The singing of minstrels was occasionally interrupted by dueling knights at the tournament grounds in Edessa. The wedding of princess Arda and Baldwin of Boulogne was a lavish celebration at the estate of Armenian Prince Thoros, east of the Euphrates. Two years later, the free-spirited Armenian would become the first Queen of Jerusalem, but her high title did not bring her happiness.

With The Shield & On The Shield

Assessing the developments of the war in May, 1918, British historian Christopher Yoker wrote, “Had the Armenians suffered a defeat in the battle of Sardarapat, the word ‘Armenia’ would simply have become a geographical term.” General Movses Silikov led this decisive battle for the survival of the Armenian nation.
