Mountain Lion’s Pride

Haghardzin Monastery is one of the masterpieces of Armenian medi¬eval architecture. Even after many centuries, tourists still look for the magnificent eagles in the sky above the monastery while they cau¬tiously listen to the sounds of the virgin forest anticipating the wrath of the reputed mountain lion disturbed by their unexpected visit.

Her Majesty the Hometown Girl

It’s difficult to say what is more impressive, that this year’s miss Oregon is armenian or that there are armenians in Oregon at all. We invited Sylvie Tarpinian to Los Angeles not only to learn about her life and career, but also to introduce her to the culture of her ancestors, of which there are many in this city.

Fire on ice

Who said Armenians do not play hockey? Or they do not play well enough for the professional world? For the record: Zach Bogosian is leading the way with his adventures in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in Switzerland.

Hallmark of the maker

“Hallmark of the Maker” is a phrase that Michael Aram uses to describe how his decorative objects are made. But what does this phrase really mean? It comes down to the age old human desire to leave a mark in a transitory world. Michael Aram has found his hallmark by mixing design and artisan traditions to create his decorative, one of a kind yet functional pieces with metal as his primary medium.

St. Lazarus island: the venetian custodian of armenian culture

Venice, nicknamed Serenissima in Italian or Queen of the Adriatic in English, is made up of more than forty islands. About half the islands lie abandoned while others house the municipal cemetery, sanitariums, mental hospitals, prisons, market, gardens, medieval churches, a luxury marina and hotel. Just a mile away, but still within distant sight of St. Mark's Square, is St. Lazarus Island, locally known as San Lazzaro degli Armeni, the long-revered shrine of Armenians and its literati.

That Infamous Casanova

The name of Giacomo Casanova – the brilliant storyteller, unsurpassed womanizer, and master of espionage – became a common noun centuries ago. Although we could not establish valid information regarding the genealogical roots of the famous Venetian adventurer, there is a wealth of information regarding an Armenian family, the Casanovas, which first appeared in 18th century Venice.

Napoleon’s Armenian “Ring”

As soon as the thirty year old Napoleon Bonaparte stepped onto Egyptian soil, the nations oppressed by the Ottoman Empire took heart. Inspired by the hope of shedding the loathed yoke of oppression, they started preparations for war against the Sultan. Armenians were among the first who came to the French camp.
