Mike Boornazian wins 'Player of the Week' honors

Mike Boornazian, a Bates sophomore, was named Maine Player of the Week by the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association.

Boornazian, a 6-foot-5, 200 pound guard/forward hybrid from Portland, Conn., was a Maine All-Rookie Team selection a year ago, won his first state player of the week honor after scoring 23 points in both of Bates' games at the Salem State Holiday Classic, shooting .533 (16-30) from the field and from three-point range (8-15), in addition to 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Boornazian ranks third in scoring (18.7 ppg) and fifth in rebounding (7.9 rpg) among Maine's Division III colleges. The state top 5 poll has the Bobcats (7-3) rated No. 3 for the fifth consecutive week. Junior captain Graham Safford (Hampden, Maine), who also won MMBCWA Player of the Week honors earlier this season, entered this week leading all Maine players in scoring (20.6 ppg) and assists (5.7 apg), and third in steals (2.2 spg).

Boornazian earned Maine Rookie of the Week accolades twice in 2013 (2/14, 2/21). He also played in all 25 games with seven starts, scoring 8.1 points per game and grabbed 5.4 rebounds per game. He averaged 22.1 minutes per game.

He went to Xavier/Wilbraham & Monson High School in Conn.

He is expected to graduate in 2016.
