We and our mountains

Here is a scenario – several shepherds make a barbeque out of a stray sheep high in the mountains. Then the owner of the lost sheep turns up and takes part in their midnight feast. So…is it a theft or just a late dinner? And what does the criminal code have to do with it? It is – we and our mountains, our sheep, and our laws. And where does one draw a line between a misdeed and a crime? Eternal questions do not ever get old. Probably that is why Henrik Malyan’s film We and Our Mountains (based on Hrant Matevosyan’s novel) became a cult film. It also turned out that the members of a popular hip-hop group Hye Tgherk and the alliance Hye Team also looked good as the favorite characters of the movie.

Revaz: - Have I been robbed? There were four sheep and now they are gone. Nobody stole anything from me. I sold the sheep. And I have no complains whatsoever.

Ishkhan: - I slaughtered Revaz’s sheep and we ate it. We had trouble digesting it though…
Lieutenant: - What did he ask for in return?
Ishkhan: - He asked for his sheep.
Lieutenant: - But you slaughtered it…
Ishkhan: - Well, knowing we are stuck he demanded a lot of money.
Lieutenant: - You should have beat him up.
Ishkhan: - How could we? We would not dare - it is much too shameful.

Revaz (the judge): - I pay for that meat.
Ishkhan: - But we paid too!
Revaz (the judge): - But first you ate it, then you paid for it.
Ishkhan: - Well, do you always pay in advance?
Revaz (the judge): - I eat meat only if I can pay for it, Citizen Antonyan. Would you really pay to Revaz if he did not turn up timely?
Ishkhan: - Why can’t you understand that there is no crime here? The guys were hungry, so we slaughtered the sheep. We and our Revaz, we and our sheep, we and our mountains…How can we steal from ourselves?...
