The numerical value of letter Դ is 4. With the Greeks, Δ (“delta”), besides four, also meant ten, since this is the first letter in the Greek word Δεκα [deka]. Letter Դ symbolized the fourth day of creation of the world, when the God “made two great lights – the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.” In the alphabetic acrostic written by Mashtots, Դ stands for Դատաւոր (datavor – judge).

Դ – is a plosive clear sound. In the middle and at the end of Eastern Armenian words it is sometimes muffled and sounds as aspirate թ [th] (մարդ [marth] – man). In the Western Armenian it is pronounced as voiceless aspirate թ [th] in all positions (դաշտ [thasht] – field).

Դ is also the symbol of the Armenia Dram
